The Georgian Triangle Humane Society (GTHS) is a wonderful local not-for-profit charity that provides a second chance at life for domestic animals that have been abandoned, neglected, or abused.
Thinking about adopting a cat or dog?
Visit the GTHS website or go into the animal shelter located at 549 Tenth Line in Collingwood to meet the sweet pets currently available for adoption. The shelter is open for adoption 12-4 every day, no appointments necessary. Someone at the shelter will then have a conversation with you to match you to the kind of pet that will work best for your home and lifestyle. The goal is to find the animals at the shelter loving, forever homes, so the volunteers at GTHS want to ensure that it’s the right fit for both the animal and the pet owner.
Once you find the pet that might be a good fit and have had a chat with the adoption counsellors, you can fill out an adoption application form available online. GTHS does same-day adoptions once a good match has been made.

GTHS Signature Pets Overlooked Pets
Overlooked pets are cats or dogs that have been at GTHS at least 3x longer than the average length of stay (for dogs >42 days, for cats >90 days). The program spotlights their story, reduces their adoption fee and ensures they can be recognized by adopters that really want to help an animal in need.
Underdogs are animals that are experiencing behavioural challenges which are acting as barriers to their adoption. There are a variety reasons why a pet might qualify as an underdog and these animals require a pet owner that will be able to dedicate the time and energy required to help the pet continue their behaviour modification. Each adopted underdog pet will include resources and counselling specific to their new pet’s needs.
Special paws have the same adoption fee as overlooked animals and include animals that have a chronic medical condition or that are quite elderly. These animals will require ongoing medications or care and adoption includes a comprehensive medical condition disclosing their medical history. Resources and medication (where applicable) will be included.
FIV+ Cats
FIV is Feline Immunodeficiency Virus that typically causes a weakening of the cat’s immune system. It cannot be spread to other species including dogs or humans. Cats that are FIV+ are usually infected via a deep bite would from another FIV+ cat or through mating and less commonly through an infected mother’s milk. These cats must visit the vet 2 time a year and must be kept indoors and fed a high quality kibble diet (raw foods are not recommended). FIV makes a cat more susceptible to secondary infections and illnesses and owners must be observant and report any changes in behaviour or health to their vet. If protected and promptly treated for any secondary illnesses, most FIV+ cats live normal and long lives.
